Pull-Up Leather

Kriterion’s leather is handcrafted from the finest natural hides, meticulously treated with a proprietary blend of oils and waxes. This innovative finishing technique enhances the leather’s aesthetic appeal and also ensures a supple texture and remarkable resilience. The unique pull up effect occurs when the leather is stretched or bent, revealing lighter tones and creating a dynamic, two-toned appearance that deepens over time.

Process

The Leather

  • Selection of High Quality Raw Leather: The process begins with selecting high quality, full-grain leather, which is the top layer of the hide. The full-grain retains the leather’s natural texture and characteristics, which will enhance the pull-up effect.
  • Chrome Tanning: The leather is then tanned to preserve and make it durable. This method uses chromium salts to speed up the process, resulting in leather that is more pliable and water resistant.
  • Applying Oils and Waxes (The Pull-Up Treatment): Oils and waxes are then carefully massaged into the leather to nourish the hide and create the signature soft, supple feel. The waxes and oils help the leather resist moisture, dirt, and wear. The oils and waxes also contribute to the leather’s ability to show color shifts when stretched or compressed, which is the hallmark of pull-up leather.
  • Conditioning and Drying: Once the oils and waxes are applied, the leather is left to condition and dry slowly, allowing the materials to fully absorb. During this stage, the leather continues to soften, and the oils and waxes enhance its rich color.
  • Buffing and polishing: After the leather has dried, its lightly buffed or polished to bring out the natural sheen. This gives the leather its smooth, slightly glossy finish, while ensuring that the oils and waxes remain evenly distributed on the surface.
  • Better with Age: As the leather is used and exposed to the environment, it will darken and soften further, with color shifts becoming more pronounced in areas of wear and handling. The aging process makes each item made from pull-up leather even more unique as the texture and color evolve.
  • Final Inspection and Quality Control: Finally, the leather is inspected to ensure it meets quality standards. Any imperfections or natural blemishes are either left in or carefully worked into the final product to preserve the leather’s authenticity and character.
